Redemption of Meek Mill

With the recent news of Cardi B and Offset getting back together, it provides yet another example that bridges don’t stay burned for too long. When Meek Mill and Drake had their beef back in 2015 it seemed unlikely they would work together again anytime soon. It started with Meek Mill calling out Drake’s alleged use of ghostwriters in a tweet posted July 2015. We all know how that turned out, with Drake releasing “Back to Back”, the responses on Twitter were enough to see what the general public thought of the track. Meek Mill had a delayed response with “Wanna Know” that was not a strong enough response to sway the general public back to Meek’s side.

Meek Mill’s life ended up spiraling on a downward path since the beef. His relationship with Nicki Minaj ended around January 2017 which he admitted later on was tough.  November 6th, 2017 he was sentenced to spend two to four years in prison for violating a probation. He had been on probation since age 21 after being convicted on gun and drug related charges. His sentencing became a public example of the need for criminal justice reform.

Meek Mill was able to secure his release from prison April 24th, 2018. Unlike in 2015, the tables had turned and the general public was mostly on his side. He even had support from major figures as well from Jay-Z, to Philadelphia 76ers co-owner Michael Rubin, and even New England Patriot’s owner Robert Kraft. Meek Mill went from a public embarrassment to a symbol of criminal justice reform in the U.S.

Meek Mill was able to use the momentum and released Championships November 30th, 2018. The album was a return to form for Meek Mill, rating as his best albums among critics and fans alike on Metacritic. One of the best moments of the album was his reunion with Drake on Going Bad which marked the official end of their beef. Meek’s redemption is a prime example of how life can be turned around for anyone willing to persevere. Maybe the redemption and reunion could serve as an example for another rapper who could use redemption and a much needed reunion. Kanye? Watch the Throne 2? One can dream.
