Insomnia starts with the T.A.B artist walking at night in a dark, desolate street with nothing but the street lights to illuminate him. The visuals for the video continue at night with T.A.B rapping about living in the 757 area, his struggles as an artist in the area and the difficulties of post-graduate life while driving around his hometown in the Virginia Beach area. Fellow rapper DareRell comes in next appearing in a restaurant where he is seated at a table with stacked pancakes on a plate, he proceeds to raps about stacking as much money as possible not only for his own needs but also those close to him. After the chorus, the track turns back to T.A.B who is in a dress shirt and tie stating how he did not get hired for a job even with his college degree. The video then shows T.A.B and DareRell trading bars back and forth discussing staying on the grind for money even if it means resorting to selling drugs to get it. He uses the concept of graduating for an overarching discussion on how the American dream is not promised; instead of living with the naivety he once had he is now “wide awake” and staying awake to reach the success he seeks. His views on college in general are particularly interesting when he touches on being laid off from work which his degree did not protect him from. Insomnia is an entertaining song which provides insight into T.A.B’s life while giving a glimpse of his talent as an artist especially with his wordplay and DareRell’s presence providing a welcoming contrast in style creating a more interesting track. Insomnia is a quality song with a quality video and it will be interesting to see the direction T.A.B takes his music from here.
